A little more about Fexofenadine Tablets
Fexofenadine Tablets: Things you need to know

What is Fexofenadine used for?

Fexofenadine is a non-drowsy antihistamine used to provide quick and effective relief from the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and other allergies, such as pet or dust allergies. It is also used in higher strengths (180mg) to treat chronic hives.

Hay fever is caused by the release of the chemical histamine in the body. Histamine release is a reaction to an irritant (allergen) such as pollen or dust that leads to inflammation and the symptoms of hay fever.

Symptoms of hay fever include:

  • Itchy, watery or red eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Head or earache
  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Discomfort in the mouth, throat, ears or nose
  • Blocked or runny nose, often accompanied by a loss of smell

Asthma sufferers might also experience the following hay fever symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Increased coughing and wheezing

Can you buy Fexofenadine over the counter?

Lower-strength fexofenadine (120mg) is available over the counter in pharmacies. However, higher strengths (180mg) or larger quantities for long-term use typically require a prescription from a qualified healthcare professional via the GP or an online pharmacy such as Simply Meds Online.

Fexofenadine Hydrochloride is available in 120mg & 180mg strength tablets. 120mg is used for persistent hay fever and symptoms of other allergies. 180mg is usually reserved for patients with hives (urticaria) or with severe respiratory symptoms that haven't responded well to 120mg tablets.

How does it work?

All antihistamines work by blocking the release of histamine in the body. This stops the symptoms of Hay fever from occurring.

How to use?

You should take Fexofenadine Hydrochloride when you experience persistent symptoms of hay fever or other allergies. A tablet is best taken in the mornings, once a day. This will give you relief from the symptoms of hay fever throughout the day.

Can you take Fexofenadine during Pregnancy and Breastfeeding?

Fexofenadine should not be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless instructed otherwise by your GP

How to use Fexofenadine

The recommended dose is one tablet (120 mg) daily.

Take your tablet with water before a meal.

If you take too many tablets, contact your doctor or the nearest hospital emergency department immediately.

Symptoms of an overdose in adults are dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue and dry mouth.

If you forget to take Fexofenadine, do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet. Take the next dose at the usual time as prescribed by your doctor.

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

When to take Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is most effective when taken once daily in the morning with water. It is best taken before a meal. It is usually recommended for patients who have already tried other over-the-counter antihistamines, such as Loratadine or Cetirizine, and didn’t find them successful.

Can you take Fexofenadine with Piriton?

It is generally not recommended to take two different antihistamines like fexofenadine and Piriton (chlorphenamine) together unless specifically advised by a doctor. Doing so can increase the risk of side effects like extreme drowsiness and dry mouth.

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Is Fexofenadine drowsy?

Fexofenadine is classified as a non-drowsy antihistamine. It is less likely than older antihistamines to make you feel sleepy, though a small number of people (up to 1 in 10) may still experience some mild drowsiness or dizziness.

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • headache
  • drowsiness
  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • dizziness.

Can you take cetirizine and fexofenadine together?

No, you should not usually take cetirizine and fexofenadine at the same time. Both are antihistamines that work in similar ways. Taking both increases the risk of adverse effects without necessarily providing better allergy relief.
