Genital Thrush is a fungal infection caused by the yeast candida and is often referred to as "yeast infection". Candida is found in and on the body naturally but the amount present on the skin is usually controlled by the immune system and other microorganisms like bacteria. Thrush occurs when the amount of candida on the body rises above the usual balance and colonises in a specific area causing a condition known as "candidiasis". Vaginal and penile thrush are both examples of candidiasis. Symptoms of a candidiasis in women can include vaginal discharge (clear or milky), itching, redness and discomfort around the outside of the vagina. Vaginal thrush will affect most women at some point. It is usually easily treatable. Men often experience red spots under the foreskin or at the base of the penis and sometimes itching or discomfort when urinating. Treatments are available as a capsule (fluconazole) and creams and pessaries (clotrimazole) containing antifungal active ingredients to eradicate the infection. P.S. 2019
