Cold Sores
The first signs of a cold sore are usually a strange tingling sensation on the skin, or it could be an itchy, burning sensation inside the mouth, on the lips or even around the nose. After a day or two, you will notice red spots, indicating the infected area, shortly followed by small blisters on the skin. However, few people realize that cold sores are caused by the HSV-1 virus and that they are highly contagious.
People with cold sores rarely laugh, or they keep their smiles to a minimum because it is one of the most painful things one can have on the lips or surrounding skin like the nose area. Although cold sores typically go hand-in-hand with flu and colds, you can also get them when your immune system weakens due to external factors such as persistent stress, or fatigue, or even by sunlight and other bacterial infections.
The best thing you can do for yourself and the loved ones around you when you have contracted either genital herpes or a cold sore is to avoid any contact as it is a highly contagious virus. In addition, you need to get the right medical treatment so that you can stop the virus in its tracks and prevent it from spreading further.
What Should I Do When I Have a Cold Sore?
As long as the blisters or sores are visible, no matter where they appear on the skin, you can infect other people. It is important to avoid contact and to wash your hands frequently, especially after treating the sores. The virus can spread, even if you touch your eyes, your genitals or other parts of your body!
A cold sore can last anywhere from a week to 10 days or even longer. The bad news is that once you have a cold sore, the herpes virus stays in the nerve cells of your body for life. In fact, you could have contracted the virus in your childhood when you had chickenpox. If you contracted the virus years ago and could be dormant in your body, it can be triggered at any time by a disease such as bronchitis, or even stress and fatigue.
Treatment for Cold Sores
Antibiotics have been proven not to be effective in the treatment of genital herpes or cold sores, but rather antiviral medicine such as Aciclovir tablets, which is often used to treat outbreaks of genital herpes, and Aciclovir cream to treat cold sores around the mouth and nose.
When prescribed 800 mg of Aciclovir tablets, and depending on your medical condition, it should be taken every four hours, five times a day for seven up 10 days. Treatment should be initiated within 72 hours of the onset of the first symptoms or lesions on the skin.
Zovirax cold sore cream (which is available without a prescription) can also be prescribed to treat cold sores or or around the lips (herpes labialis) that are periodic in children over the age of 12 years and adults who have normal immune systems.
Lipsore 5% cream (2g) is also a stalwart lip cream that can shorten the outbreak for about a day or two.
Antivirus pills are only available by prescription and only for individuals who regularly get genital herpes or cold sores. Some people also benefit from supplements that build up the immune system, such as Vitamin C.
