When the pancreas is producing normal amounts of insulin, but the body cells are unable to use it properly can also be referred to as insulin resistance. It is still unknown as to why some people become insulin resistant but there are a number of lifestyle factors that can contribute to its development such as:

• lack of exercise
• obesity (increased weight around the belly area)
• excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition and progression can be slowed by making lifestyle changes. Medication, in the form of tablets may be required based on the progression of the condition although some patient also benefit from better control by using injectable insulin. 

Type 2 diabetes is more common than Type 1.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Both types of diabetes have similar symptoms, the only difference is that Type 1 diabetes develops fast. Usually within a couple of weeks whereas type 2 symptoms can go undetected for several years. The symptoms develop slowly as the disease progresses.

Some of the main symptoms you may notice are:

• Feeling thirsty
• Peeing more frequently than usual especially at night
• Feeling tired / lethargic
• Weight loss or muscle loss
• Thrush
• Slow healing cuts or wounds
• Possible changes with vision
