Taking Herpes pills is not as bad as it sounds and will provide effective relief for viral infections such as herpes simplex

Jun 17, 2021 Genital Herpes

Many people have never heard of the herpes simplex virus until they are diagnosed with the condition. Although the disease appears harmless, it can cause a lot of pain and discomfort, and should therefore be treated immediately with antiviral drugs. Medical science clearly distinguishes between two types of herpes simplex viruses, namely the HSV-2 virus which causes sores or blisters on the genitals of humans, and the HSV-1 virus which is the cause of cold sores around the mount and nose area.

The first signs indicating the presence of genital herpes, are usually a burning, or itchy sensation around the genital area. After a day or two, an outbreak in the form of small blisters or ulcers on the skin will start to appear and the condition could last anything from 10 to 20 days, depending on its severity and the treatment applied.

Most people with an initial genital herpes outbreak and a normal immune system, need immediate treatment as the symptoms can become severe and prolonged.

What should I do when I suspect I have genital herpes?

If you suspect you may have the herpes virus, you should visit your doctor or health clinic as soon as possible to get a test. Your doctor may also refer you for a sexually transmitted disease test (STD) or take a sample from an open culture if you currently have an outbreak. This culture can be used to determine the presence of the herpes virus in your body.

Can herpes simplex be treated?

Yes, fortunately there are several antiviral medicines available to clear the infection and treat the symptoms. Clinical studies have shown that two types of medicines especially are beneficial in the treatment of genital herpes, namely Aciclovir 400mg and Valaciclovir 500mg.

Acyclovir was one of the first medicines that were ever used for viral infections, including herpes simplex. It works by reducing the reproduction and further spread of the virus to other cells in the body, but it cannot prevent the damaging of cells that are already infected with the virus.

Famciclovir also works by limiting the reproduction of the herpes virus, and this medicine is metabolised to Aciclovir in the liver and intestines and can be used at lower doses than Aciclovir.

The recommended dosage for these medicines is as follows: Aciclovir 400 mg three times a day for seven to 10 days, and Valaciclovir 500mg twice a day whole with water, for up to five days.

How to best control the situation

Firstly, it is important that you fully understand and learn more about the herpes simplex virus and how the infection works. The more you understand what is happening in your body, the easier it will be to deal with outbursts and outbreaks.

Herpes has been very well documented and scientifically studied over the years, and information can be found all over the internet. As a result, there is ongoing research in this area and while current treatments are very effective, some new treatments may be underway in the near future.

What should I do when I have been diagnosed with herpes simplex?

It is absolutely key that you avoid spreading the infection, which can easily occur because it is highly contagious. Sit down and discuss your illness with your partner and most importantly, take extreme precautions to avoid spreading the virus, one of which is not to touch the blisters on your skin.

You may also be required to make certain changes in your lifestyle, like avoiding having multiple sexual partners, and using protection during sexual intercourse when you are not having an outbreak. When you do have an outbreak, you should avoid any sexual interaction until the infection has cleared.
