Q. I’ve been using Saxenda for a while now but I am getting side effects after increasing my dose, what should I do?

A. When you increase your dose, you may experience side effects. Go back to previous dose for 1 week before increasing your dose again. If side effects persist, please speak to your GP or provider.

Q. How does Saxenda work for weight loss?

A. Saxenda is a weight loss medicine that contains the active substance liraglutide. It is similar to a natural occurring hormone called glucagon – like pepticle-1 (GLP-1) that is released from the intestine after a meal. Saxenda works by actin on receptors in the brain that control your appetite, causing you to feel fuller and less hungry. This may help you eat less food and reduce your body weight. Initiation with Saxenda is 1 month or 3 pens. Results vary from patient to patient but the medication claims to show results after 2 weeks.

Q. How long do Saxenda pens last?

A. Your treatment starts with a low dose which will gradually increase over the first five weeks of treatment. The usual starting dose is 0.6mg once a day for at least a week, 1.2mg week 2, 1.8mg week 3, 2.4mg once a day week 4 and week 5 onwards 3.0mg once a day. Pen one should last 17 days, pen 2 8.5 days. Pen 3 6.5 days, each subsequent pen should last 6 days.

Q. Where to inject Saxenda?

A. The Saxenda shot can be injected into the upper arm, thigh or front of stomach. Users should not inject the medication into the veins or muscles.

Q. How does Saxenda work?

A. Saxenda for weight loss is designed to suppress the appetite by working similarly to an appetite-controlling hormone in the body.

Q. How many Saxenda pens will I need in a month?

A. Once you have reached a dose of 3mg a day you will need 5 pens per month to remain on your maintenance dose.

Q. Can Saxenda cause hair loss?

A. Hair loss is not a reported side effect of Saxenda. If you are experiencing hair loss please speak to your GP/Healthcare provider.

Q. What happens if I use a Saxenda pen that was frozen and then thawed out?

A. According to the official website (link). Saxenda should not be frozen or used after it has been frozen.

Q. I’m on the seventh day of Saxenda and I don’t feel any difference in my hunger cravings or anything. I still eat whatever I want – is this normal. Will it start working?

A. Individuals should feel the effects of Saxenda within two weeks.

Q. I missed two days of Saxenda – can I take my next dose now?

A. It is best to consult with a physician to see when the next dose should be taken safely.

Q. Is it normal to have absolutely no appetite when taking Saxenda?

A. Saxenda is designed to decrease appetite drastically. However, if it becomes an issue, it may be best to consult with your prescriber.

Q. How much weight can I lose on 1200 calories a day and Saxenda?

A. Weight loss with Saxenda and a low-calorie diet will result in different weight-loss results in everyone. However, according to the Saxenda website, the average user loses 18.5 pounds after a year of using the medication.

Q. Does using Saxenda require a doctor’s appointment every 3 months?

A. No, however you do need to check if you have lost at least 4% of your initial BMI after 12 weeks on the 3.0mg a day dose, or maximum tolerated. This will need to be confirmed with our prescriber when re-ordering.
