|Unwanted facial hair is embarrassing and disheartening. Women with the condition have low self-esteem and hideaway. A lot of time and energy goes into hiding unwanted facial hair and building up self-confidence. There are different ways to remove hair including; shaving, waxing, depilatory cream, sugaring, laser treatment and hair removal cream.
Causes of unwanted facial hair include PCOS, menopause, hormonal imbalance, excess weight and genetics. Treating underlying health issues don’t always prevent unwanted facial hair. Women with these conditions also have extra hair on other parts of their body such as; thighs, chest, arms and nipples.
Also known as hirsutism unwanted facial hair causes a great deal of distress. Excess androgens cause hirsutism. These are derived from the male hormone testosterone and produce male pattern hair growth. Social media and selfies highlight our flaws more than ever before.
What Causes Unwanted Facial Hair?Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the main causes of unwanted facial hair. Cysts in the ovaries cause weight gain and hormone imbalance. Women with PCOS suffer from other negative symptoms including; fatigue, mood swings and depression. Unwanted facial hair is the symptom that bothers sufferers most of all. Women with Cushing's Disease and other adrenal gland conditions also have unwanted facial hair. Symptoms of such disorders include; bone and muscle weakness, high blood pressure, headaches, weight gain and fluctuating sugar levels. Adrenal conditions cause an increase in cortisol production which increases the number of androgens in the system. Androgens promote increased hair growth in women. Some medication causes unwanted facial hair in women. Anabolic steroids, immunosuppressants and testosterone supplements cause unwanted facial hair. Reducing the dosage of such medications may reduce symptoms. Consult your doctor before changing your dose. Genetics play a part in hair production. Some women are just naturally hairy and hair on their faces is just a characteristic they have.
TreatmentTreatment varies depending on your budget and desperation to get rid of unwanted facial hair. Ways to remove facial hair include; shaving, waxing, threading, laser treatment, depilatory cream and hair removal cream. Women choose the method that suits them the best. Shaving is effective and is an easy solution but skin may become sensitive and develop rashes. Hair will regrow by the end of the day leaving a six o’clock shadow and needs shaving again. Waxing pulls the hair from the follicles so that hair takes longer to regrow. It grows back thinner but needs repeating when hair is long enough. Sugaring and threading are similar because hair has to be a certain length before the treatment is effective. People go to beauty therapists for this type of treatment. Laser treatment works by channelling bursts of light onto the hair follicles. This damages the hair follicles and prevents most unwanted hair. It takes time, is costly and only lasts as long as you are receiving treatment. Depilatory cream dissolves the hair shaft at the bottom effectively cutting it away. It doesn’t stop hair from growing and may cause rashes. Hair removal cream such as Vaniqa contains the active ingredient Eflornithine which acts upon androgens in the body. It weakens the hair follicles preventing further hair growth. All treatment has its side effects and drawbacks and none of them permanently remove hair. As soon as treatment stops hair growth resumes and your hair will grow back. To review and purchase unwanted facial hair please click here.
