Premature Ejaculation - Causes and Support

Feb 23, 2023 Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation or PE means coming too early. According to medical experts, PE is defined as when it takes less than 90 seconds to orgasm during intercourse. Premature ejaculation is a condition that mostly affects younger men but can happen to men of all ages.

If you experience PE and are concerned, speak to your GP.  They will check you out and talk about any mental health problems. When the cause is known, the condition can be treated. Premature ejaculation is common. Most men will experience it at least once.

What Causes Premature Ejaculation?

There are numerous causes of premature ejaculation, some of which are detailed below. These instances can be useful to consider but remember that each situation is different. If you have concerns about PE speaking to your GP or your local sexual health clinic is a wise first course of action.

Medical Conditions

There are a number of medical factors that may cause or contribute to PE. For example, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, prostate disease and binge drinking can all affect your ability to control your orgasm. Anxiety, depression and numerous medications are also known to be causes. It is important to rule out underlying causes of PE before considering the right treatment.

Lack Of Experience and Premature Ejaculation

Younger men sometimes suffer from premature ejaculation because they don't know how to make their orgasm last longer. This can happen because they are overly excited, nervous, or because they are used to coming quickly when they masturbate. Premature ejaculation can be managed by stimulating and stopping just before orgasm. This is something that can be achieved with practice but might be something to speak to a professional about.

Relationships and Premature Ejaculation

Relationship issues can have an impact on your sex life. You and your partner might have different expectations about intimacy. You may not be in sync with each other’s needs or may have differing opinions about how often you “should” be having sex and what is expected of you/them.

Communication can go a long way towards helping with this and getting everyone on the same page. Talking to each other is the first step but it is not uncommon for couples to speak to a therapist about intimacy and any issues they may be having.

A New Partner or Sex After a Break

If you have been celibate for a long time, the excitement or nervousness associated with being in a new relationship can bring on premature ejaculation.  While this may only happen the first time it might knock your confidence in the future, leading to repeat issues.

Treatments for Premature Ejaculation

If premature ejaculation persists then you may need to consider medication that will prevent it from happening. Priligy is a medication often prescribed to help with premature ejaculation and has high success rates recorded.

Priligy Tablets

If your doctor thinks there is no other issue, they may give you Priligy (Dapoxetine) to treat premature ejaculation.

Priligy has Dapoxetine in it, which is part of a group of medicines called 'selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors' (SSRIs). This type of drug stops the body from breaking down serotonin. Priligy does this for a shorter time. This can make you take longer to ejaculate and help you have more control over ejaculation. This could help reduce worry or frustration about ejaculating too quickly.

Our pharmacist here at Simply Meds Online can send out Priligy where appropriate. Find out more about Priligy here.

Emla Cream

EMLA cream is a type of numbing cream. It can be used in a variety of ways, but when applied to the tip of the penis, it can help to numb the nerve endings that are part of ejaculation.

EMLA cream is not formally approved as a treatment for premature ejaculation (PE), but many men over 18 have used it successfully. Studies have shown that the cream can increase the time between getting an erection and ejaculating.

It contains lidocaine and prilocaine, which are safe to use directly on your skin. It begins to work in about 15-30 minutes and may be preferred by people who don't want to take tablets and can't plan their sexual activity ahead of time.

The Emotional Side of Premature Ejaculation and Your Wellbeing

Psychologically, premature ejaculation can make people feel embarrassed, disappointed, and inadequate. When that happens, relationships suffer and affection can disappear due to the lack of intimacy and feeling nervous. Both partners may experience negative emotions when PE happens because sex may no longer be enjoyable, but instead become a source of frustration.

Outside of medical support and treatment for premature ejaculation, it is important to consider the emotional impact it can have on an individual or a couple. There is counselling and support available. Speak to your GP for advice or a referral.

Premature Ejaculation - Understanding and Support

While it happens to most men at least once in their lives that isn’t reassuring to you or your partner in the moment. It’s important to know that it isn’t uncommon and that often can be dealt with. Looking at medical and mental/emotional causes can be key to realising triggers and getting to the root cause of the issue. Whatever that is, your GP can help and here at Simply Meds Online we can send your prescribed PE medication, if appropriate, discreetly to your door (no logos or info about the contents).
