A post recently went viral on social media claiming:
“Apparently, these are nature’s Ozempic. They are GLP-1 patches and are science-backed.”
It’s a bold claim, but as with many things online, it doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. At Simply Meds Online, our pharmacist, Parv, has responded in a short video that you can watch on Instagram or TikTok. His message is simple: GLP-1 patches are not what they claim to be.
What are GLP-1 patches, and Do They Contain GLP-1?
Despite the name, GLP-1 patches do not contain any GLP-1. That alone is a red flag. Licensed GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro are prescription treatments developed to mimic the GLP-1 hormone in the body. They help to regulate blood sugar levels and support weight loss, and are only available following a medical consultation due to their strength and clinical profile.
The patches being sold online under the “GLP-1” name are not in the same category. They are not licensed medicines, do not go through the same testing, and are not prescribed by healthcare professionals. The claim that they are “nature’s Ozempic” is not only misleading, it is simply untrue.
What Do These Patches Contain?
Most of these patches rely on an ingredient called berberine. Berberine is a compound found in certain plants such as barberry and goldenseal, and it has been used in traditional herbal medicine for centuries. Some small animal studies, mostly in rats, suggest that Berberine may have an impact on blood sugar regulation and metabolism. However, there is currently no robust evidence in humans that berberine is effective for weight loss.
As Parv says in the video (summarised):
“GLP-1 patches are not what they say they are. They don’t contain GLP-1. The only ingredient that might have a mild effect is berberine, and even then, there’s no strong clinical evidence in humans. They do not work in the same way as GLP-1 medicines.”
