Here comes Movember - Men's Health Matters

Oct 25, 2022 Hair Loss

Men’s health does matter and it’s great to see Movember prioritising physical and mental health so vigorously. As they put it, “Mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer – we’re taking them all on”. Since 2003 the team behind Movember has been responsible for funding 1200+ men’s health projects, spearheading key research and pushing for recognition of the factors that affect many men at some point during their lives.

Their support in an area that hasn’t been prioritised enough in the past has changed the face of men’s health and doubtless countless, saved lives.

Remember, Remember, The Month of Movember

In 2022 Movember’s “Know Thy Nuts” campaign was the focus and was aimed at encouraging people to check for and catch testicular cancer early, as well as supporting those dealing with it. The Movember “month”, i.e. November challenges people to grow facial hair (moustaches!) in support. What does a moustache have to do with men’s health? Awareness, and fundraising for important causes.

If you want to register for the Movember challenge or find out more about what Movember is and what they do, you can do so here. Is a ‘tash not really your thing? There are many different ways you can support men’s health, including Move for Movember.

Movember 2023

Focusing on mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Putting the Spotlight on Men’s Health

Here at SimplyMedOnline, we are keen to highlight the work that Movember does all year round for such an important cause. We also recognise that men have their own medical needs in the same way that women do. With this in mind we stock a number of products that have been designed solely for the needs of our male patients.

Hair Loss in Men

Losing hair can be a sign of a number of things. While for some, male pattern baldness might be something a man is genetically inclined to, there are other causes. Hair loss may be a side effect of a medical issue, such as anaemia or a thyroid problem. Also, a diet low in protein and iron can also cause your hair to thin. Stress can also be a contributing factor to male hair loss. If you start losing your hair and are concerned please see your GP.

Vitamins and Supplements Designed for Men’s Needs

Men have different needs than women, which is why taking a supplement that is designed for men just makes sense. Wellman Original, for example, has been specially formulated with men’s needs in mind. Containing 29 essential nutrients, Wellman original for men offer support for energy levels, boost the immune system, reduce tiredness and fatigue and helps to maintain testosterone level thanks to the zinc it contains. This also helps to encourage good reproductive health in males, where aren’t other issues at play.

Family Planning Support

When planning a family, knowing your sperm count can be advantageous, particularly if it is taking longer than expected and you are looking for information. Where finding out your count once meant a trip to the hospital with a sample and waiting for weeks, thanks to Conceive Plus Male Fertility tests, you can assess your sperm count from home. While the results by no means give you the full picture in terms of your reproductive health, they can be a good starting point and something you might want to consider before talking to a GP or fertility specialist.

Sexual Health for Men

As well as ensuring you Know Thy Nuts and you are vigilant about checking your testicles, there are other sexual health issues that men need to consider. These include everything from contraception to dealing with issues such as erectile dysfunction and/or premature ejaculation. Our sexual health section includes a number of useful products, from lubrication to products such as Stud100 which can help reduce penis touch sensitivity. This can help some men with premature ejaculation.

If you are struggling with any aspect of sexual help please find someone who can talk to you, for example, your local sexual health clinic or your GP.

Mental Health Support

Mental Health support and suicide prevention feature highly in the Movember group’s campaigning and awareness. According to them, “Stronger social connections can reduce the risk of suicide” and they are actively helping and encouraging men to talk more about the things that matter.

If you are struggling please speak to someone. You can contact the Samaritans on 116123, speak to the NHS via 111 or in an emergency call 999. There are people who can and who want to help.

In Conclusion

In the past men’s health was a secondary consideration and it certainly didn’t get the attention it needed. We applaud Movember and anyone who is working to remove barriers to men accessing physical and mental health support.

It matters.

You matter.
