Black Girl Sunscreen - New Range!

Black Girl Sunscreen - New Range!

Jul 21, 2022 Skin Care

Here at Simply Meds Online, we are delighted to announce that we’ve been able to add Black Girl Sunscreen to our existing suncare range. This range has been designed and developed by Shontay Lundy, an American Entrepreneur who quite rightly puts it, “Black girls need sunscreen too”.

Everyone needs to protect their skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays and using an effective sunscreen helps with this. Wearing sunscreen not only protects against sunburn but also reduces the risk of skin cancer, premature skin ageing, hyperpigmentation and more.

About the Black Girl Sunscreen Company

Black Girl Sunscreen was created by Shontay Lundy in 2016. Shontay wanted to get the conversation about sun care for people of colour moving forward and from there, Black Girl Sunscreen was born.

Black Girl Sunscreen is an SPF 30 lotion infused formulated for women of colour. Black Girl Sunscreen has been created using natural ingredients including avocado, jojoba, cacao, carrot juice, and sunflower oil. Specially formulated for melanated skin, this sunscreen dries completely clear. This means a white cast isn’t left visible on the skin.

Designed to be part of your daily skincare routine Black Girl Sunscreen products moisturise and nourish as they protect.

More About the Black Girl Sunscreen Products

Black Girl Sunscreen is proud of the fact that their sunscreen is made by women of colour for people of colour. Not only do they use natural ingredients but their products are vegan-friendly, cruelty-free and don’t contain parabens or Oxybenzone. While Oxybenzone is not tested on animals it is commonly used in sunscreen products and can cause damage to sea life and coral reefs.

All Black Girl Sunscreen products are fragrance-free to avoid irritation, particularly for those with sensitive skin.

Black Girl Sunscreen for Kids

Children love to be outside, making memories and sunscreen is an important part of making sure they are safe while they do so. Black Girl Sunscreen for kids offers SPF 50 protection. Children can now also enjoy safe sun play without the sticky feeling that many sun creams leave behind, alongside a noticeable white residue.

Do People of Colour Need Suncare?

Of course! People of colour are not exempt from needing to wear sunscreen to protect themselves, far from it. Sadly though, myths still exist about whether black skin needs sun protection or whether they are protected by the levels of melanin in their skin. This news story, featuring Isser Nener debunks that myth and shows that black skin needs sun protection too.

According to Black Girl Sunscreen, people of colour should be more vigilant when it comes to sun protection. Information released by the Skin Cancer Foundation shows that ethnicity can have a significant impact on the risk of skin cancer and more. To quote the SCF, “The estimated five-year melanoma survival rate for Black patients is only 71 percent, versus 93 percent for white patients”. It appears that more Caucasians develop skin cancer yet people of colour are more likely to die from it.

These are harrowing statistics.

What is SPF and What Level is best?

The Sun Protection Factor (or SPF) that you see on sunscreen indicates the protection level it offers again UVB rays. SPF protects you from approximately 96% of UVB rays and SPF 50 98%. No creams or screen laminate 100% of harmful rays so it’s important to follow other sun-safe tips such as using the shade during the hottest parts of the day.

All Black Girl Sunscreen has a minimum rating of SPF 30 and SPF 50 for children’s products to ensure the best coverage. You can find out more about SPF, sunscreen and sun safety here.

In Conclusion

Black Girl Sunscreen is a relatively new product but is already proving incredibly popular. It is very clear that the founder and her team believe in these products and here at Simply Med Online we are proud to support new and ethical companies that are working towards keeping people well and safe.
