Migraine

Zolmitriptan Tablets

Zolmitriptan (Zomig) belongs to a class of medicines called selective serotonin 5-HT1B / 1D receptor agonists known as "triptans" for short. Zolmitriptan can be used with migraines with or without aura.

Triptans are very effective in stopping a migraine from reaching its full intensity.

When taken at the onset of a migraine, Zolmitriptan can effectively stop a migraine from developing and thus prevent any disruption to the patient's life beyond that point.

Usually, a single dose of Zolmitriptan is enough to stop a migraine.

Zolmitriptan Tablets: Things you need to know

What is Zolmitriptan used for?

Zolmitriptan is available as an active ingredient, in tablets, Zomig 5mg spray and orodispersable tablets in doses of 2.5mg and 5mg.

As explained above, Zolmitriptan is from a group of drugs called 'triptans' which can help some people find their headace is much less painful and they can resume their normal activities.

Zolmitriptan can make you feel drowsy or dizzy, you should not operate machinery or drive until you know how it makes you feel.

How does Zolmitriptan work?

Zolmitriptan works as a selective agonist for the 5-HTIB/1D receptors leading to the contraction of vessels around the brain. When these vessels are dilated (during a migraine attack) they cause symptoms of the migraine to kick in such as headaches, aura, nausea and vomiting. (NHS)

How are Zolmitriptan taken?

This medicine is only taken on a when required basis, it is not to be used in a prophylaxis manner. This means that it doesn’t prevent migraines from occurring it only helps stop them once you have one.

Usual Dose for migraine: One Tablet to be taken at the onset (beginning) of a Migraine. Do not use to prevent migraine.

The usual starting dose is 2.5mg of zolmitriptan.

If a 2.5mg dose did not give you enough help with your migraine then the dose can be increased to 5mg.
