Doxycycline 100mg

Doxycycline belongs to a group of medicines called tetracycline antibiotics. It is an effective and affordable anti-malarial and doesn't require a long "loading" time. You can start taking Doxycycline from just 2 days before your trip for it to be effective.

How is it taken?

One capsule is taken 1-2 days before entering the endemic area (area affected with malaria). Then continued as a ONCE DAILY dose whilst in that area. Once you leave the area with malaria then you must continue the ONCE DAILY regime for a further 4 weeks.

Although affordable, the downside to Doxycycline is that it can cause photosensitive skin reactions in certain patients and is therefore not really recommended if you are intending to spend a large amounts of time in the sun. The alternative is Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil)

How many shall I order?

The number of capsules you need to order will depend on the length of stay in malaria infected areas. But don’t worry, we’ve done all the maths for you! All you need to do is state how long you are spending in the area and we will send out the right amount.

Are there any precautions when using Doxycycline?

As with all medication there are some things you need to be aware of, with doxycycline take the following into account:

- Avoid taking Zinc, iron or indigestion remedies 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking this medication.

- Protect the skin from sunlight – Doxycycline can increase the skins sensitivity to sunlight making it easier to get sun burn.

It is important to remember that malaria prevention medication does not necessarily need to be taken if you are in the country where malaria exists. Some countries have certain areas where malaria prophylaxis is recommended and others which don’t require it. If you are going to be in and out of malaria infested areas then it’s probably best to continue taking it for the duration of your travel. Bear this in mind when selecting the quantity of malaria capsules you order. You can get the most up to date information regarding malaria zones by clicking HERE.

B.V. 2019

As an antimalarial:-  ONE CAPSULE to be taken daily, starting 1-2 days before travelling and continuing until 4 weeks after returning.

If you take more of your medicine than you should If you (or someone else) swallow a lot of capsules at the same time, or you think a child may have swallowed any, contact your nearest hospital casualty department or tell your doctor immediately.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you forget to take a dose take it as soon as you remember it and then take the next dose at the right time.

Do not stop treatment before 4 weeks after returning from malaria area.

Like all medicines, Doxycycline can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Generally side effects are mild however you should be aware of the photosensitive side effects associated with Doxycycline.
