What is Gaviscon Liquid?

Gaviscon Liquid is a treatment for the symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux such as acid regurgitation, heartburn, and indigestion, for example, following meals or during pregnancy, and for symptoms of excess stomach acid (hyperacidity).

This liquid contains three active ingredients: calcium carbonate,  sodium alginate, and sodium bicarbonate. Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate work as antacids to neutralise your stomach acid and ease the pain and discomfort this can cause. The sodium alginate works by forming a protective barrier over the contents of your stomach, preventing acid reflux and soothing irritation in your chest and throat.

Warnings and Precautions 

Children under 6 years: not recommended.

Do not use if:

• If you are allergic to any of the ingredients this medication contains

Speak to your GP before use if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding
• You have severe kidney problems
• You have electrolyte disturbance causing a low level of phosphate in the blood, also known as hypophosphatemia
• You suffer or have suffered from significant kidney or heart disease
• You have reduced amounts of gastric acid in your stomach

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Sodium alginate 500mg, Sodium bicarbonate 267mg, Calcium carbonate 160mg

Other ingredients: Carbomer, Methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and Propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), Saccharin sodium, Sodium hydroxide, Peppermint oil, and Water.

How do I take Gaviscon Liquid?

Dosage:

Adults and children over 12: Take TWO to FOUR 5ml spoonfuls after meals and at bedtime.

Children under 12 years: Should only be taken on medical advice.

What are the side effects of Gaviscon Liquid?

Possible common side effects:

• constipation
• taste impairment
• nausea
• vomiting
• stomach cramps
• diarrhea
