What is Derbac-M Liquid?

Derbac M is a treatment for head lice, pubic lice and scabies. It is a water-based formula and alcohol free. 

What is the active ingredient in Derbac M and what does it do?

The active ingredient in Derbac M is malathion. This works to kill head lice, nits, pubic lice and scabies mites. It does this by blocking a natural enzyme in the nit or mite, which stops it from growing and leads to their death.

May be suitable where asthma or sensitive skin is a problem.

Suitable for children from 6 months old.

Warnings and Precautions

• Not suitable for use on children under the age of 6 months.

• Avoid getting into contact with eyes.

• Do not use this product on the broken or infected skin.

• Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients this medicine contains .

• Speak to your GP or Pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. 

• Speak to your GP or Pharmacist before use if you are taking any other medication.

• Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Ingredients

Active Ingredient: Malathion 0.5% w/w.

Other Ingredients: Methyl Hydroxybenzoate (E218), Propyl Hydroxybenzoate (E216), Emulsifying Wax, Potassium Citrate, Citric Acid, Perfume HT 52 and Purified Water.

How do I apply Derbac-M Liquid?

Dosage:

Adults, the elderly and children over 6 months:

Head lice: 

Apply sufficient liquid to dry hair to ensure that no part of the scalp is left uncovered. Work into the hair spreading the liquid evenly from the roots to the tips. Leave the hair to dry naturally in a warm but well ventilated room. After 12 hours, or the next day if preferred, shampoo the hair in the normal way. Rinse the hair and comb while wet to remove dead lice and eggs (nits) using comb provided. Repeat treatment after 7 days.

Pubic lice: 

Apply liquid to entire skin surface paying particular attention to all hairy areas including beards and moustaches. Avoid any other areas above the neck. Leave on for at least one hour, but preferably overnight, before washing off. Treatment should be repeated after 7 days.

Scabies: 

Apply the liquid to the entire skin surface. In adults it may not be necessary to apply above the neck but children under the age of 2 years should have a thin film of the liquid applied to the scalp, face and ears, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Do not wash off or bathe for 24 hours. If hands or any other parts must be washed during this period the treatment must be re-applied to those areas immediately. Treatment should be repeated after 7 days.

• Not to be used more than once a week and for more than three consecutive weeks.

• Family members and close contacts should be treated simultaneously.

• Under 6 months: under medical supervision only.

What are the side effects of Derbac-M Liquid?

Possible side effects:

• Skin irritation.

• Allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, throat or tongue (angioedema), swollen eyes or anaphylaxis. Get immediate medical advice if you think you have had an allergic reaction to the liquid.

• Chemical burns
