What is Permethrin 5% Cream?

Permethrin 5% Cream is used to treat scabies and crab lice on the body.

What is the Active ingredient in Permethrin cream and how does it work?

Permethrin cream contains the active ingredient permethrin. Permethrin is an effective insecticide that helps to treat infestations of scabies and crab lice and prevent them from spreading. It works by affecting their nervous system when they comes into contact with it or eat it. Once they come into contact it kills them by attacking the nervous system which causes muscle spasm, paralysis and death.

Permethrin is toxic to insects as they can’t break it down.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not use if:

• You are allergic to permethrin or any other ingredient this product contains

Speak to your GP or Pharmacist before use if:

• You are treating infants 
• You are known to be allergic to chrysathemums or other compositae
• You have asthma or eczema, as this product could worsen symptoms of these conditions

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Permethrin (5% w/w)

Other ingredients: alcohol, white soft paraffin, macrogel cetostearyl ether, isopropylmyristate, benzyl alcohol and purified water.

How do I apply Permethrin Cream?

Dosage:

Scabies-

Adults: apply up to 30g of cream.

Children 6-12 years: apply up to 15g of cream.

Children 2 months to 5 years: apply up to 7.5g of cream.

Apply to clean, dry, cool skin. If a warm bath has been taken prior to treatment, the skin should be allowed to cool before the cream is applied.

Wash whole body thoroughly 8-12 hours after treatment. Treatment in children aged 2 months to 23 months should be given under close medical supervision.

Children below 2 months: not recommended.

Crab lice- 

Over 18 years only: apply up to 30g of cream to cover the pubic region, peri-anal, inner thighs down to the knees and any hair that grows up from the pubic area to the chest/stomach.

Wash whole body thoroughly 24 hours after treatment.

Under 18 years: not recommended.

What are the side effects of Permethrin Cream?

Possible side effects:

• Itching 
• Reddening of the skin
• unusual sensations on the skin
• Tingling, pricking or skin burning sensation 
• Dry skin
