Vitaros 3mg/g Cream Applicators

Vitaros is a topical cream used to treat erectile dysfunction. It contains the active ingredient Alprostadil which is a prostaglandin (PGE-1) and can also be found in other products such as Caverject and MUSE.

Vitaros cream is absorbed into the skin and acts by dilating (opening) the blood vessels that control the movement of blood into the penis. It also helps blood vessels which let blood out of the penis to constrict (tighten) and thus keeping blood in the penis enabling it to stay erect long enough for intercourse.

Vitaros is unique within the line of alprostadil products as it gets to work by being applied to the opening of the urethra at the tip of the penis, via a plunger (provided in the pack). The effects of the treatment are noticeable within 5-30 minutes, and can last for 1-2 hours afterwards. All the other alprostadil products have to injected thus making Vitaros relatively non-invasive to use.

Vitaros is particularly useful for patients that find it difficult to swallow tablets or experience any intolerable side effects from oral PDE-5 inhibitors for erectile dysfunction. Vitaros causes less known side effects, has less interactions and is less affected by food and drink than the oral PDE-5 inhibitors. It is also suitable for patients who also take nitrates for angina / heart disease, who cannot safely take oral PDE-5 inhibitors. 

The application instructions for this treatment should be carefully followed, and you should only ever apply it as prescribed. Following the instructions provided with the product will help to  gain its maximum effect and also reduce the likelihood of experiencing side effects.

Apply ONE DOSE of cream via the pre-prepared plunger (applicator) to the tip of the penis (urethra) 5-30 minutes prior to anticipated sexual intercourse.

After applying the cream hold your penis upright for 30 seconds to allow it to absorb into the skin. Do not use more than one dose in any 24-hour period, and do not apply it more than 2-3 times in any one week.

Like all medicines, VITAROS can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Contact your doctor immediately iff you get a long-lasting erection of more than 4 hours or if you notice any signs of an allergy to your product. 

Common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 patients): THE PATIENT (MALE) mild to moderate local aching, burning or pain and redness of the penis - rash - genital pruritus - penile oedema - inflammation of the glans penis (balanitis) - tingling, throbbing, numbness, burning

PATIENTS PARTNER (if female): - mild vaginal burning or itching, vaginitis This effect may be due to the drug or to the act of vaginal penetration. Using a water-based lubricant can help to make vaginal penetration easier and also reduce side effects.

Duration of side effects: Most effects are short acting and resolve within 1-2 hours
