A little more about Elocon 0.1% Ointment (Mometasone Furoate)
Elocon 0.1% Ointment (Mometasone Furoate): Things you need to know

What is Elocon Ointment?

Elocon Ointment is used on the skin to relieve the redness, swelling, itching and discomfort of many skin problems such as:

  • psoriasis
  • eczema
  • other types of dermatitis

Elocon Ointment is most commonly prescribed to people who suffer from severe psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis and where non-prescription treatments such as emollients or milder steroid creams such as hydrocortisone have not been effective.

A thin layer of Elocon Ointment should be applied evenly and gently rubbed into the affected area of skin once daily. When the cream is applied, irritation will be reduced immediately and it is effective within 24 hours.

What is the Difference Between Elocon Ointment and Elocon Cream?

Elocon Ointment is greasier and thicker than Elocon Cream, which is easier to apply.

Elocon Cream is lighter, meaning it is usually better for larger areas of skin that may be moist or weeping and absorbs quickly.

Elocon Ointment is ideal for dry or scaly areas or skin that may be thickened; it helps create a barrier to ensure absorption.

If you need help deciding on which one is best for you, please talk to one of our medical professionals.

Elocon Ointment is suitable for adults and children to treat skin conditions like severe eczema and psoriasis.

How to use Elocon Ointment:

Always follow the instructions given by your doctor.

A thin layer of Elocon Ointment should be applied thinly and evenly and gently rubbed into the affected area of skin once a day.

Do not apply Elocon to broken or infected areas of skin, unless the infection is also being treated. Don't apply it to the face unless instructed to by your specialist. Don't apply it around your eyes or eyelids.

Take care to avoid getting the ointment in your eyes, mouth or nose. Rinse with cold water if accidental contact occurs.

Wash your hands thoroughly after applying Elocon, unless your hands are the area being treated.

Side effects are more likely if you use Elocon on extensive areas of skin, broken or raw skin, delicate areas of skin like the face, areas of skin that rub together like armpits or skin folds, or if you use it underneath airtight dressings or for long periods of time.

For the full list of side effects, visit the Elocon patient information leaflet.

Some side effects may include Skin irritation, such as redness, rash, itching or burning on application.

Stop using Elocon and consult your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of a reaction or if your skin condition is getting worse.

Some other uncommon side effects:

  • Spread or worsening of untreated skin infections.
  • Thinning of the skin.
  • Reduced skin pigmentation.
  • Stretch marks (striae).
  • Groupings of fine blood vessels become prominent under the skin (telangiectasia).
