Protopic 0.03% Ointment 30g

Protopic 0.03% ointment contains the active ingredient Tacrolimus which is an immunomodulator. Atopic dermatitis is caused by an overreaction of the skin's immune system. This results in skin inflammation, itchiness, redness and dryness. Protopic changes the immune response and alleviates skin inflammation and itching. Protopic is also a suitable alternative for those who are intolerant to topical corticosteroids. 

Once moderate to severe atopic dermatitis is cleared or nearly cleared after 6 weeks of flare treatment, and if you are experiencing frequent flares (i.e 4 or more a year), using protopic 0.03% ointment twice weekly may be able to prevent flares from returning or prolong the time between flare-ups.

How to use Protopic ointment:

Always use medicine as directed by your pharmacist or doctor.

• Apply Protopic to affected regions of your skin in a thin layer.
• Protopic can be used on most parts of the body, including the face and neck, as well as the creases of your elbows and knees.
•  Do not apply the ointment to your nose, mouth, or eyes. If the ointment gets on any of these locations, it should be washed off and/or rinsed with water.
• Do not use bandages or wraps to cover the skin being treated.
• Unless your hands are already being treated, wash your hands after applying Protopic.
• After a bath or shower, make sure your skin is totally dry before using Protopic.

Only for short-term use for atopic dermatitis (eczema) of the face or body.

Maximum of 4 weeks treatment.

A very common side effect is a itching and burning sensation of the skin when using Protopic Ointment. These symptoms are usually mild to moderate and generally go away within one week of using the ointment. 

Some other common side effects include:

• redness
• feeling of warmth
• pain
• increased skin sensitivity (especially to hot and cold)
• skin tingling
• rash
• local skin infection regardless of specific cause including but not limited to: inflamed or infected hair follicles, cold sores, generalised herpes simplex infections
• facial flushing or skin irritation after drinking alcohol is also common
