What is Anbesol Liquid?

 

Anbesol Liquid is an oral pain relief medication that can help to ease discomfort caused by mouth ulcers, teething, and denture irritation.

 

This is sugar-free and suitable for use in adults and babies. As anbesol liquid is a pharmacy product and is only meant for short-term use of no more than 7 days.

What are the active ingredients in Anbesol liquid and what do they do?

 

Lidocaine hydrochloride 0.9% - This is a local anaesthetic, which means it eases pain wherever you apply it.

Chlorocresol 0.1% & Cetylpyridinium chloride 0.02% - These are antiseptics, which means they kill bacteria, protecting from infection as the mouth or gums heal.

 

Warnings and Precautions

 

Not suitable for young children under 5 months of age.

 

Do not use if:

 

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients this product contains or if you have had an allergic reaction to it previously.
  • You have porphyria, which is a disease that causes stomach pain, constipation, changes in the colour of your urine, skin rashes, and behaviour disturbances. 

 

Speak to your GP or our pharmacist before use if:

 

  • You have open wounds or damaged areas in your mouth
  • Your symptoms continue for more than 7 days or come back frequently
  • You suffer from alcoholism or have liver disease, epilepsy, or another condition which places you in a group of high-risk patients. 

 

If you take any of the medicines or types of medicines you will also first need to speak to your GP or our pharmacist before use:

 

  • Other anaesthetics or other medications which are similar to lidocaine
  • Erythromycin
  • Itraconazole
  • Antiarrhythmic drugs
  • Cimetidine
  • Beta-blockers
  • Calcium chloride
  • Codeine phosphate
  • Diamorphine hydrochloride
  • Paveretum
  • Quinine hydrochloride
  • Methylcellulose
  • Non-ionic surfactants

 

Ingredients

 

Active ingredients; lidocaine hydrochloride 0.90%w/w, chlorocresol 0.10%w/w and cetylpyridinium chloride 0.02%w/w.

 

Other ingredients: alcohol (96%), menthol, glycerol, caramel colouring (comprised of quinoline yellow (E104), amaranth (E123), sunset yellow (E110) and green S (E142) and purified water.

 

 

How do I use Anbesol Liquid?

 

Directions:

 

  • Before using this product, make sure your hands are clean and dry.
  • Cover the spout of the bottle with a clean fingertip and turn the bottle upside down and then back upright, this will deposit 0.25ml of Anbesol liquid onto your fingertip.
  • Apply the liquid directly to the affected area with your finger.

 

The amount of Anbesol you will need to use will depend on your age:

 

  • For adults and the elderly: Use two 0.25ml applications (0.5ml) at a time. If necessary, reapply after 3 hours
  • For children over the age of 5 months: Use one 0.25ml application at a time. If necessary, reapply after 3 hours. Do not use it more than 6 times in 24 hours. Do not use for more than 7 days with each teething episode

 

 

What are the side effects of Anbesol Liquid?

 

  • Allergic reaction
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Dermatitis, showing symptoms such as inflammation, redness, itching, scaly skin
