What is the active ingredient in Senokot Max Strength tablets and how does it work?
 

The active ingredient in Senokot Max is senna. Senna comes from senna fruit pods. Senna is a laxative that works to relieve constipation by stimulating the muscles in your bowel. This will help to move the build-up of poo through your system so you can have a bowel movement more easily and comfortably.
 

Warnings and Precautions

• Not suitable for children under 12 years 
• Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding speak to your GP or Pharmacist for alternatives

Do not use if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients this product contains
• You have a blockage or narrowing of your intestinal tract or bowel 
• You have Paralysis or lack of muscle tone in your bowel
• You have Appendicitis or an inflammatory bowel disease
• You have Severe dehydration
• You have Persistent or undiagnosed abdominal complaints
• You have Faecal impaction or rectal bleeding for which you do not know the cause, or blood in your poo
• You have already taken a laxative and are still constipated
• You have had a sudden change in your bowel habits which have lasted for more than 2 weeks
• You have Kidney or heart failure

Speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking this product if:

• You have an intolerance to some sugars, as these tablets contain lactose.
• You have kidney disorders

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Senna

Each tablet contains powdered Alexandrian Senna fruit (pods) (Cassia senna L (C. acutifolia Delile)) and Tinnevelly Senna fruit (pods) (Cassia angustifolia Vahl) equivalent to 15mg hydroxyanthracene glycosides, calculated as sennoside B.

Other ingredients: calcium phosphate, maize starch, magnesium stearate, and lactose monohydrate.

How do I take Senokot Max Strength tablets?

Dosage:

Adults the Elderly and children over 12 years old: ONE tablet at night.

DO NOT take more than ONE tablet in 24 hours

Children under 12 years old: NOT to be given except on medical advice.

What are the side effects of Senokot Max Strength tablets?

Possible side effects:

• Abdominal pain
• Abdominal spasm
• Diarrhoea.
• Taking senna can cause your urine to turn a red-brown colour. If this happens, it is nothing to worry about and will disappear when you stop taking the tablets.
