What is the active ingredient in Senokot tablets and how does it work?
The active ingredient in Senokot is senna. Senna comes from Senna fruit pods. Senna is a laxative that works to relieve constipation by stimulating the muscles in your bowel. This will help to move the build-up of poo through your system so you can have a bowel movement more easily and comfortably.
Warnings and Precautions
- Not suitable for children
- Not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding speak to your GP or Pharmacist for alternatives
Do not use if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients this product contains
- You have a blockage or narrowing of your intestinal tract or bowel
- You have paralysis or lack of muscle tone in your bowel
- You have appendicitis or an inflammatory bowel disease
- You have severe dehydration
- You have persistent or undiagnosed abdominal complaints
- You have faecal impaction or rectal bleeding for which you do not know the cause or blood in your poo
- You have already taken a laxative and are still constipated
- You have had a sudden change in your bowel habits which has lasted for more than 2 weeks
- You have kidney or heart failure
Speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking this product if:
- You have an intolerance to some sugars, as these tablets contain lactose.
- You have kidney disorders
Ingredients
Active ingredient: Senna
Each tablet contains powdered Alexandrian Senna fruit (pods) (Cassia senna L (C. acutifolia Delile)) and Tinnevelly Senna fruit (pods) (Cassia angustifolia Vahl) equivalent to 7.5mg hydroxyanthracene glycosides, calculated as sennoside B.
Other ingredients: calcium phosphate, maize starch, magnesium stearate and lactose monohydrate.
