The SkinLabs Skincare Framework: Cleanse, Treat, and Protect

Mar 31, 2026 Skin Care

Navigating the world of clinical skincare can be intimidating, especially when working out the correct order of application for the best results. At SkinLabs, we simplify the process using a clear three-pillar framework: Cleanse, Treat, and Protect. This structure ensures that every product in your skincare collection has a specific purpose and performs with maximum effectiveness.

1. The Cleanse Pillar: Protecting the Foundation

Cleansing is the foundation of every routine, but "clean" should never mean "stripped."

At SkinLabs, we advocate for barrier-friendly cleansing. Your skin barrier (the acid mantle) is a delicate ecosystem of lipids and beneficial bacteria. If you use harsh, high-pH soaps, you create micro-tears and dehydration, making it impossible for your subsequent products to work without causing irritation.

  • Why it matters: A healthy barrier keeps moisture in and irritants out.
  • The Goal: Remove impurities, excess oil, and pollutants while maintaining the skin’s natural pH.
  • The Result: Skin is perfectly prepped and permeable, meaning your clinical-grade serums can actually sink in rather than sitting on top of dead skin and debris.

2. The Treat Pillar: Targeted Correction

This is the corrective phase of your routine where the heavy lifting happens. The Treat category is where we address your specific skin concerns using high concentrations of active ingredients.

  • Serums: Lightweight delivery systems that carry ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid or Vitamin C deep into the dermis.
  • Actives (Active ingredients): Potent ingredients like Retinoids for ageing or acne, AHAs/BHAs for exfoliation, and Niacinamide for pores and texture.
  • Targeted Solutions: Specific spot treatments or medical-grade creams designed to solve localised issues like hyperpigmentation or active breakouts.

3. The Protect Pillar: Future-Proofing

Protection is non-negotiable. Without this step, the progress made in the Treat phase can be undone in a single afternoon of sun exposure. This pillar is about defending the skin from ageing, which is damage caused by external factors.

  • Broad-Spectrum SPF: Protects against UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays. This is the single most effective anti-ageing product you can own.
  • Antioxidants: Ingredients like Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid act as a second line of defence, neutralising free radicals from pollution and blue light that SPF might miss.

Deep-Dive FAQs: Master Your Skincare Routine

What is the correct order of application for skincare products?

The general rule of thumb is to apply products from the thinnest to the thickest texture.

  1. Cleanse: Wash (using your cleansing product) and pat dry.
  2. Treat: Apply liquid toners, then water-based serums, followed by heavier gels or creams.
  3. Protect: Use a moisturiser if needed and always finish with SPF.

How does a Morning (AM) routine differ from an Evening (PM) routine?

Think of your morning as Defence and your evening as Repair.

Morning: Focus on Protection.

  • Use a gentle cleanse, an antioxidant serum (such as Vitamin C), and plenty of SPF.

Evening: Focus on Correction.

  • This is the time for double-cleansing (to remove SPF and makeup) and using photosensitive actives like Retinol or exfoliating acids that work best while your body is in its natural cellular repair cycle (and out of the sun).

Can I mix different "Treat" products together?

Be careful. Using a Vitamin C serum at the same time as a Retinoid or an AHA can destabilise the ingredients or cause chemical burns.

  • The SkinLabs Tip: "Cycle" your active ingredients. Use Vitamin C in the morning and save your Retinoids for the evening. Always read the instructions that come with your skincare products.

What are the most common mistakes people make?

  1. Over-exfoliation: Using too many "Treat" products (like scrubbing every day while using a Retinol) leads to a compromised barrier, resulting in redness, stinging, and breakouts.
  2. Neglecting the Neck: The skin on your neck is thinner than on your face. Always extend your Treat and Protect steps down to the chest.
  3. Applying SPF only on sunny days: UV rays are present even on cloudy days and can penetrate glass windows. Protection is a 365-day commitment, even here in the UK, where we’re not known for our sunny weather.

How long should I wait between steps?

You do not need to wait 20 minutes between every layer. However, give your Treat step a moment to feel "tacky" rather than "wet" before applying your Protect layer. This prevents pilling, which is when the product balls up on the skin surface.
