What is Omeprazole?
Omeprazole is a medicine licensed for use in acid reflux. It belongs to the "Proton Pump Inhibitor" or "PPI" group of medicines. belongs to a group of medicines called ‘proton pump inhibitors’ or "PPIs" for short.
How do PPIs work?
All PPIs actively reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. The stomach produces acid and secretes it via the "Proton Pump". PPIs block the activity of the Proton pump, stopping it from producing excess acid. Omeprazole works very quickly to achieve this and can block activity for up to 24 hours thus providing all day relief.
Taking Omeprazole
Omeprazole capsules provide all day relief if taken in the morning on an empty stomach. The capsules are designed to bypass breakdown in the stomach, ensuring they can provide maximum effect throughout the day. Omeprazole is also available in a dispersible tablet as Losec MUPS. This formulation is particularly useful for those patients that have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Other uses in adults:
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease’ (GORD). This is where acid from the stomach escapes into the gullet (the tube which connects your throat to your stomach) causing pain, inflammation and heartburn.
- Stomach and Duodenal ulcers
- Ulcers caused by the H. Pylori infection.
- NSAID induced ulcers
- Excess stomach acid caused by Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Omeprazole is a fast acting, convenient and effective treatment for acid reflux. A single capsule daily can alleviate symptoms throughout the whole day.
Recommended dose for Acid Reflux:- ONE CAPSULE to be taken ONCE DAILY preferably 1 hour before food.

If you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking Losec and contact a doctor immediately:
Losec may in very rare cases affect the white blood cells leading to immune deficiency. If you have an infection with symptoms such as fever with a severely reduced general condition or fever with symptoms of a local infection such as pain in the neck, throat or mouth or difficulties in urinating, you must consult your doctor as soon as possible so that a lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis) can be ruled out by a blood test. It is important for you to give information about your medicine at this time.
