Vaginal Infections Thrush and Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

While both thrush and bacterial vaginosis (BV) are very common, they’re two different types of infections and as such require different treatments. However, they are not always easy for women to identify.

What is Thrush and what can cause Thrush?

Yeast and bacteria are naturally present in your vagina. Thrush occurs when the level of Candida albicans increases.

  • You have a weakened immune system

  • Pregnancy (mainly during the third trimester)

  • When on your period

  • When taking certain medicines and antibiotics

  • If you have a medical condition like diabetes or HIV or if you are undergoing  chemotherapy

Thrush is not an STI or a serious condition and in most cases, it can be treated easily and effectively. It is also normal and very common for 3 in 4 women to suffer from it at least once during their lifetime.

What is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) and what causes it?

Bacterial vaginosis is an infection that affects your vagina, causing an unpleasant, fishy-smelling discharge. This happens when the natural balance of the bacteria in your vagina is disturbed.

  • Intercourse (especially if you have been with a new partner (BV is NOT an STI)

  • Using perfumed soaps and products (even scented toilet rolls) around the vagina.

  • If you use an IUD contraceptive device

  • During or after you have your period

Please note the cause of bacterial vaginosis is generally hard to pin down as a lot can cause it.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.

  • Make sure to follow the instructions on the product leaflet.

  • Do not take any decision of medical relevance without first consulting your medical practitioner.

Canestest won’t be able to give you an accurate diagnosis in any of these situations:

  • If it’s less than one day before or after your period.

  • There are signs that your period has arrived or you have any signs of vaginal bleeding.

  • It’s been less than 12 hours since you’ve had sexual intercourse or used a vaginal douche.

Do not use if:

  • You are menopausal - Results could be changed in menopause as menopause can change the vagina’s pH level.

Speak to your GP or our Pharmacist before use if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How do I use Canestest Self Test For Vaginal Infections?

Directions:

Wash your hands thoroughly before and after using Canestest.

It’s similar to inserting a tampon and it shouldn’t cause you any discomfort.

Step 1

Unwrap the Canestest swab (make sure the swab tip does not come into contact with anything before you insert it into your vagina).

Step 2

Hold the Canestest swab by the handle and insert the yellow tip into your vagina, rotate the swab, and then remove it.

Step 3

After 10 seconds check the tip of the Canestest swab to see if the colour has stayed the same or changed to blue or green.

The test results should be interpreted in conjunction with your symptoms, based on the symptoms table on the back of the pack, helping you to understand which common vaginal infection you may be suffering from, such as thrush or bacterial vaginosis.
