Femseven Patches: Things you need to know

Femseven Patches are Hormone Replacement Patches (HRT) that are for women who are experiencing the menopause. This treatment contains the female hormones estrogen and progestogen and is used in postmenopausal women one year after their menopause.

This patch is to be applied once a week continuously for women without a uterus. Women with a uterus need to use cyclical progestogen for days 12-14 of the cycle. HRT with estrogen alone is not suitable for women who have not had a hysterectomy because estrogen alone stimulates the overgrowth of the lining of the uterus. This is known as endometrial hyperplasia and can lead to cancerous growths in the uterus. 

Femseven Patches are used to relieve symptoms of the menopause. These symptoms are caused by a decrease in the women's hormone estrogen and can cause symptoms such as:

  • Night sweats

  • Insomnia 

  • Hot flushes 

  • Loss of libido 

  • Pain during sexual intercourse 

  • Dry mucous membranes (eys, vagina, mouth)

  • Osteoporosis

  • Anxiety, irritability, depression

All medicines can cause side effects. HRT medication can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following diseases have been reported more frequently in women taking HRT compared to women not taking them:

  • Breast cancer

  • Abnormal growth of the lining of the uterus or uterine cancer (endometrial hyperplasia or cancer)

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs (venous thromboembolism)

  • Heart disease

  • Ictus

  • Probable memory loss if HRT is started over 65 years

The following side effects may occur with this medicine:

Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 patients):

  • Headache

  • Abdominal pain

  • Back pain

  • Tenderness or pain in the breasts
