Femoston Tablets: Things you need to know

Femoston is a pill used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and is given to postmenopausal women after at least 12 months from their last natural period. Femoston contains two female hormones estrogen and progestogen. 

  • (Estrogen) Estradiol replaces the loss of Estrogen production in menopausal women and helps to relieve the symptoms of the menopause.

  • (Progestogen) Dydrogesterone is an orally active progestogen. Because estrogens promote endometrial growth, unopposed estrogens increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer. Adding a progestogen greatly reduces the estrogen-induced risk of endometrial hyperplasia in women who have not had a hysterectomy.

Femoston is used to relieve symptoms of the menopause. These symptoms are caused by a decrease in the women's hormone estrogen and can cause symptoms such as:

  • Night sweats

  • Insomnia 

  • Hot flushes 

  • Loss of libido 

  • Pain during sexual intercourse 

  • Dry mucous membranes (eys, vagina, mouth)

  • Osteoporosis

  • Anxiety, irritability, depression

Use as directed by your Doctor.

 

All medicines can cause side effects. HRT medication can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following diseases have been reported more frequently in women taking HRT compared to women not taking them:

  • Breast cancer

  • Abnormal growth of the lining of the uterus or uterine cancer (endometrial hyperplasia or cancer)

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs (venous thromboembolism)

  • Heart disease

  • Ictus

  • Probable memory loss if HRT is started over 65 years

The following side effects may occur with this medicine:

Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 patients):

  • Headache

  • Abdominal pain

  • Back pain

  • Tenderness or pain in the breasts
