Verapamil Tablets come in four strengths: 40mg, 80mg, 120mg and 160mg.

What are Verapamil Tablets?
 

Verapamil tablets belongs to a group of medicines known as calcium channel blockers. This medication may be used alone or together with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

How does Verapamil work as a treatment for High Blood Pressure?

Verapamil works by affecting the movement of calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessels. It relaxes and widens the blood vessels and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart which improve blood pressure and the hearts workload.
 

What is High Blood Pressure?
 

High blood pressure is added workload to the heart and arteries. If this added  pressure continues for a long period of time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure may also increase the risk of heart attacks. With controlled treatment of high blood pressure these problems may be less likely to occur.

Emergency supplys of Verapamil:
 

Verapamil is a prescription only medicine and an Emergency Supply can only be issued if you are currently being prescribed this medication by your GP for high blood pressure.  You will need to fill out a questionnaire, which is then reviewed to make sure Verapamil is a suitable treatment for you. You will also need to upload proof that you have used this item before. If your order is approved, your Verapamil can be sent directly to you.

Warnings and Precautions

Always take this medication exactly as directed by your GP.

Keep out of sight and Reach of children.

Do not eat or drink grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as this can interact with the medicine.

If you are taking any new medications even over the counter medicines whilst taking Verapamil you should make your GP aware to prevent interactions.
Be careful to limit the amount of alcohol that you drink. Alcohol increases dizziness and drowsiness.

How do I take Verapamil Tablets?
 

Verapamil must be used exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are unsure contact your GP.
 

Recommended starting dose is usually:

80mg three times a day.

Your GP may adjust your dose if needed.

• You can take this medicine before or after meals.

• It should be taken at the same time each day, with a glass of water.

• Do not take Verapamil with grapefruit juice.

What are the side effects of Verapamil Tablets?

Common side effects:

• Difficulty having a bowel movement (stool)

• headache

Less common side effects:

• Acid or sour stomach

• belching

• difficulty in moving

• heartburn

• indigestion

• joint pain

• muscle aching or cramping

• muscle pains or stiffness

• nausea

• rash

• stomach discomfort, upset, or pain

• trouble sleeping

• unusual drowsiness, dullness, tiredness, weakness, or feeling of sluggishness

• swollen joints
