Exforge tablets come in two strengths: 5/160mg and 10/160mg.
Exforge tablets contain both Amlodipine and Valsartan. Amlodipine belongs to a group of medicines known as calcium channel blockers and Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). This medication may be used alone or together with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
Amlodipine works by affecting the movement of calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessels. It relaxes and widens the blood vessels and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart which improve blood pressure and the hearts workload.
Valsartan works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood passes through them more easily. Relaxed vessels increase the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart which improve blood pressure and the hearts workload.
High blood pressure is added workload to the heart and arteries. If this added pressure continues for a long period of time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure may also increase the risk of heart attacks. With controlled treatment of high blood pressure these problems may be less likely to occur.
Exforge is a prescription only medicine and an Emergency Supply can only be issued if you are currently being prescribed this medication by your GP for high blood pressure.
