Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common condition that affects both men and women. It is clinically known as alopecia and can affect patients of all ages. There are many types of alopecia and each has its own causes and symptoms. At SimplyMeds Online, we can treat Male-Pattern Baldness in men with tablets. Over time their use will prevent further balding.

Male-pattern baldness is also known as androgenic alopecia. This type of hair loss is passed down genetically and will affect around HALF of all men by the age of 50. It’s called “male-pattern baldness” because it is characterised by a specific balding pattern, a receding hairline and thinning of the hair on the temples and crown, leaving a horseshoe shape around the back and sides of the head. It is not a sign of ill health or disease.

What Causes Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern hair loss is caused by a few factors, namely a combination of genetic factors and a particular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is a hormone derived from testosterone. With age, testosterone production is needed to keep up muscle density and mass, fertility and sexual drive in men; however, sometimes it can cause overproduction of DHT. Hair follicles are sensitive to DHT and exposure to it causes the hair follicles to eventually shrink and stop functioning (Source: Healthline).

DHT itself causes a decrease in the growth phase of hair and causes thinning. This leads to hair-loss in the characteristic pattern for male-pattern hair loss. These changes can start as early as in their 20’s in some men and become more common as they get older. Once hair loss has occurred over a long period of time it may become permanent.

Treatments

Hair loss in men can be effectively treated, with a number of treatment options available, including medicinal and surgical options.

The main treatments offered at SimplyMeds Online are DHT blockers, also known as Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’. The main active ingredient is Finasteride, which lowers the levels of DHT in the scalp. This helps to reverse the balding process, leading to increased hair growth and the prevention of further hair loss. It stops the production of DHT from testosterone. The two main treatments on offer are:

Propecia – Contains the active ingredient Finasteride, and was the first brand to bring this product to market. Is more expensive than the generic

Generic Finasteride – Cheaper than alternative Propecia. It is clinically equivalent and of the same strength.

Minoxidil - available as tablets and a solution. Minoxidil Tablets are an off-label male hair loss treatment that increases blood flow in blood vessels to strengthen weak hair follicles. Minoxidil solution (generic Regaine) can be used alongside Finasteride or Dutasteride.

It is also important to maintain a proper hair care routine regularly. Hair care treatments can be used to prevent hair loss and maintain thick and healthy hair.
