Allopurinol comes in two strengths: 100mg and 300mg.
 

What are Allopurinol Tablets?

Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. These tablets can be used by patients to prevent or lower excess uric acid levels caused by cancer medicines or in patients with kidney stones. A high uric acid level can cause gout or gouty arthritis. 

How does Allopurinol work as a treatment for Gout?
 

Allopurinol works by decreasing the uric acid produced by the body.
 

Emergency supplys of Allopurinol:

Allopurinol is a prescription only medicine and an Emergency Supply can only be issued if you are currently being prescribed this medication by your GP for Gout.  You will need to fill out a questionnaire, which is then reviewed to make sure Allopurinol is a suitable treatment for you. You will also be required to upload proof that you have had these tablets before. If your order is approved, your Allopurinol can be sent directly to you.

Warnings and Precautions

Always take this medication exactly as directed by your GP.

Keep out of sight and Reach of children.

Do not eat or drink grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as this can interact with the medicine.

If you are taking any new medications even over the counter medicines whilst taking Allopurinol you should make your GP aware to prevent interactions.

How do I take Allopurinol Tablets?
 

Allopurinol must be used exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are unsure contact your GP.
 

Recommended starting dose is usually:

ONE tablet taken once a day or in divided doses.

Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed.

What are the side effects of Allopurinol Tablets?

Common side effects:

• rash
• nausea
• renal failure
• vomiting
• lazy eye
• joint pain
• blood disorders
• difficulty breathing
• cardiovascular abnormalities
• cataracts
• confusion
• decrease of sex drive (libido)
• dizziness
• bruise
• electrolyte abnormalities
• nosebleed
• foot drop
• liver damage (hepatotoxicity)
• decreased muscle tone
• inflammation of the iris in the eye
• kidney function abnormality
• severe vision impairment
• feeling unwell (malaise)
• inflammation of the nerves (neuritis)
• sore throat
• itching
• skin edema
• Stevens-Johnson syndrome
• sweating
• ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

Rare but very serious side effects of Allopurinol include:

• numbness or tingling of arms or legs,
• easy bleeding or bruising,
• signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat),
• unusual tiredness,
• painful or bloody urination,
• change in the amount of urine,
• yellowing eyes or skin,
• severe stomach or abdominal pain,
• persistent nausea or vomiting,
• dark urine,
• unusual weight loss,
• eye pain, or
• vision changes.
