What are Azopt Eye Drops?
 

Azopt contains the active ingredient Brinzolamide which is an carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. These eye drops are used to decrease pressure in the eyes of patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension. 

How does the active ingredient Brinzolamide work?
 

Brinzolamide is a  a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It works by blocking the action of an enzyme in the body which is called carbonic anhydrase. Carbonic anhydrase is usually responsible for the production of a salt called bicarbonate in the body. Bicarbonate is needed for the production of the aqueous humour. A decrease in the production of bicarbonate, in turn decreases the production of aqueous humour.

Azopt is a prescription only medicine and an Emergency Supply can only be issued if you are currently being prescribed this medication by your GP.  You will need to fill out a questionnaire, which is then reviewed to make sure Azopt is a suitable treatment for you. Recommended starting dose is usually:

ONE drop in the affected eye or eyes twice a day

What are the side effects of Azopt Eye Drops?

Common side effects:

• Eye discharge

• Redness

• Itching

• Irritation or pain in the eyes

• Blurred vision

• Abnormal eye sensation

• Dry eyes
