Gout

Diclofenac Tablets

Diclofenac Tablets are a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly used to relieve mild to moderate pain. It is effective in treating conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis by reducing inflammation and alleviating discomfort. This medication helps manage the symptoms of joint pain, stiffness, and swelling associated with these chronic conditions, improving daily function and mobility.

Additionally, diclofenac is often prescribed to treat the acute pain and inflammation caused by gout, a condition characterised by sudden, severe attacks of joint pain. By reducing the body's production of substances that cause inflammation, diclofenac provides relief from painful gout flare-ups and supports the management of other inflammatory conditions.

Diclofenac Tablets: Things you need to know

What are Diclofenac Tablets?

Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This medicine works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation. Diclofenac works by blocking the effect of chemicals in your body, called cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes.

There are two forms of diclofenac - diclofenac sodium and diclofenac potassium. The main difference between the two is that diclofenac potassium is absorbed into the body more quickly than diclofenac sodium.

These enzymes help to make other chemicals in the body, called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced at sites of injury or damage, and cause pain and inflammation. By blocking the effect of COX enzymes, fewer prostaglandins are produced, which means pain and inflammation are eased.

Diclofenac is not a suitable medicine for people who have heart disease (such as heart failure), or who have circulatory problems, or who have had a heart attack or a stroke. This is because it has been found that there is a small increased risk of heart attack and stroke in this group of people. Other anti-inflammatory medicines are more suitable for people with these conditions - ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice about an alternative medicine.

Before you start taking diclofenac, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about diclofenac and will provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you may experience from taking it.

  • Take diclofenac exactly as your doctor tells you to. Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you how much to take and how often to take it.
  • As a general rule, taking diclofenac with a glass of milk or after eating some food can help to reduce side-effects such as indigestion.
  • Usual dosage: One tablet Two to Three times a day.
