Chloramphenicol 1% w/w Infected Eye Ointment: Things you need to know

 

What is Conjunctivitis?

 

Conjunctivitis is an eye infection that normally affects both eyes. 

 

Symptoms include:

 

  • Redness of the eyes

  • Burning or 'gritty' feeling in the eye

  • watering of the eye

  • Itching 

  • A crust that forms around the base of the lashes

Conjunctivitis is highly contagious so avoid touching the eye unless necessary. Always making sure to wash your hands thoroughly after contact with the eyes. 

 

 

Directions:

 

Apply the ointment every 3 hours during the waking day, up to 3 or 4 times

 

  • Sit or lay down comfortably 

  • With clean hands pull down your lower eyelid

  • Hold the tube with the nozzle close to your eye but do not allow the nozzle to come into contact with your eye

  • Gently squeeze 1cm of ointment into the pocket created when pulling down your eyelid

  • Close your eye for 30 seconds

  • After opening your eye blink for a few seconds to spread the ointment 

  • Clean off any excess ointment with a tissue

  • Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after applying 

 

This product can sometimes blur the vision slightly so always make sure this doesn't happen before driving or any other activity that requires full vision.

 

 

Common side effects include:

 

  • Stinging or burning in the eye

  • Mild irritation, burning, or itching
