What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is an umbrella term given to conditions that cause a person’s blood glucose levels to be too high. Diabetic patients are unable to break down sugar into usable energy. This is due to the hormone Insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. Either there is not enough insulin to move the glucose to use as energy, or the insulin produced by your pancreas does not work properly anymore.

Two Major Types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes:  This type of diabetes can be caused by some viruses and usually develops in childhood or adolescence. It very rarely occurs in adulthood. This condition cannot be controlled by making lifestyle changes.

People with type 1 diabetes will require regular insulin injections for the rest of their life.

Type 2 Diabetes:   This develops when you stop producing enough insulin, or the cells in your body do not respond correctly to the insulin you produce anymore. It is still unknown as to why some people become insulin resistant, but several lifestyle factors can contribute to its development, such as:

  • lack of exercise
  • obesity (increased weight around the belly area)
  • excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks

Symptoms of Diabetes

Both types of diabetes have similar symptoms, the only difference is that Type 1 diabetes develops faster. Usually within a couple of weeks, whereas type 2 symptoms can go undetected for several years. The symptoms develop slowly as the disease progresses.

Some of the main symptoms you may notice are:

  • Feeling thirsty
  • Peeing more frequently than usual, especially at night
  • Feeling tired/lethargic
  • Weight loss or muscle loss
  • Thrush
  • Slow-healing cuts or wounds
  • Possible changes with vision

In some cases, people can go on without showing any symptoms and remain undiagnosed until complications develop. If you notice any of these symptoms or any changes, please visit your GP.

Contents:

  • 1 sensor Applicator
  • 1 sterile sensor pack
  • 1 product insert

How to use:

  • Prep the site: clean and prep a clear area on the back of your arm with a mild soap and alcohol wipe. Let dry completely.
  • Apply the Sensor: Unscrew the applicator and place it on your arm. Push down firmly until you hear a clicking noise—this means the applicator is in place.
  • Start the Sensor: Turn it on and tap the "Start New Sensor" text. Then, scan the sensor to activate the app.
  • Wait: In most cases, it will take 60 minutes before your sensor begins to offer readings.
  • Scan: To see readings, place the reader or your phone near the sensor, and it will show your history.
