What are Glimepiride Tablets?


Glimepiride is a treatment for type 2 diabetes used with proper diet and exercise to treat high blood sugar levels. It may be used in combination with other medicines for type 2 diabetes.
 

How does Glimepiride work as a treatment for Type 2 Diabetes?
 

Glimepiride works by causing the pancreas to produce insulin (a natural substance that is needed to break down sugar in the body) and helping the body use insulin efficiently whilst lowering blood sugar. This medication will only help lower blood sugar in people whose bodies produce insulin naturally.

 

What is Diabetes?

 

Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar (glucose). 

The cause of diabetes varies by type. However, no matter what type of diabetes you have, it can lead to excess sugar in your blood and to much sugar in your blood can lead to serious health problems.

Chronic diabetes: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Potentially reversible diabetes: Prediabetes and gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes: occurs during pregnancy but may resolve after the baby is delivered.

 

Emergency supplys of Glimepiride:
 

Glimepiride is a prescription only medicine and an Emergency Supply can only be issued if you are currently being prescribed this medication by your GP for Diabetes.  You will need to fill out a questionnaire, which is then reviewed to make sure Glimepiride is a suitable treatment for you. You will also need to upload proof that you have used this item before. If your order is approved, your Glimepiride can be sent directly to you.

 

Warnings and Precautions

Always take this medication exactly as directed by your GP.

Keep out of sight and Reach of children.

How do I take Glimepiride Tablets?

 

Glimepiride must be used exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are unsure contact your GP.

 

Recommended starting dose is usually:

1mg to 2mg once a day.

Dose is usually not more than 8mg per day.

Your doctor may adjust your dose. 

What are the side effects of Glimepiride Tablets?

 

  • Lack or loss of strength

  • Lower than normal blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia)

  • Reduction in the number of cells in the blood:

In general, these alterations disappear when treatment is interrupted.

  • Weight gain.

  • Hair loss.

  • Change in your sense of taste.

  • Platelets (which increase the risk of bleeding or bruising).

  • White blood cells (which makes the appearance of infections more frequent).

  • Red blood cells (which can make skin tone pale and cause weakness or difficulty breathing).

 

Any concerns or queries regarding any side effects this medicine has caused or could cause you can call your GP or our pharmacist.

If you have any severe side effects seek medical assitance as soon as possible.
