Glyceryl Trinitrate belongs to the group of medicines called nitrates. It is used to prevent angina (chest pain) caused by coronary artery disease (heart disease).
When used regularly on a long-term basis, this helps prevent angina attacks from occurring.
Glyceryl Trinitrate works by relaxing the blood vessels and increasing the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. This reduces the hearts workload.

GTN must be used exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are unsure contact your GP.
Recommended starting dose is usually:
ONE tablet placed under your tongue as soon as possible. If you're still in pain after 5 minutes you can have a second dose by putting ONE more tablet under your tongue. If you're still in pain after 5 minutes you can have a third and final dose.
Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed.
The most common is a ‘pounding’ headache, which may only be short lived. Over the counter painkillers, eg Paracetamol, may be used if necessary but please inform your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
Dizziness—this can be avoided by sitting down when using GTN.
GTN can also cause you to feel flushed.
