What is Pepto-Bismol Tablets?

Pepto-Bismol Tablets is a soothing remedy used to treat heartburn, nausea, indigestion, an upset stomach, in addition to helping control diarrhoea.

The liquid creates a protective coating over the contents of the stomach so the stomach acid does not come in contact with the stomach lining or food pipe which reduces acid reflux and indigestion.

What is the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol Tablets and how does it work?
 

The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol is bismuth subsalicylate. This works by limiting the amount of fluid that travels to your bowel, managing its overactivity. It also works to reduce inflammation in the intestine and kill the organisms that cause diarrhoea. 

Formulations of Pepto-Bismol:
 

With two formulations, tablets or liquid, you can choose which best suits you. 

Both tablets an liquid use the same active ingredients but in different doses:

Tablet: Bismuth Subsalicylate 262.5mg

Liquid: Bismuth Subsalicylate 525mg/3ml
 

Warnings and Precautions
 

Not suitable for children under 16 years of age.

Do not use if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding

• You are currently taking any salicylates including aspirin 

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients this medication contains

Speak to your GP or Pharmacist before use if:

• You are taking blood-thinning medication (anticoagulants)

• You have diabetes

• You suffer from gout

• You are taking any tetracycline antibiotics

Ingredients

Active ingredient: bismuth subsalicylate. 

Other ingredients: Mannitol, Calcium Carbonate, Povidone, Magnesium Stearate, Talc, Peppermint Flavour, Saccharin Sodium, Aspartame (E951), Amaranth Aluminium Lake (E123), Vanilla Cream Flavour.

How do I take Pepto-Bismol Tablets?
 

Dosage:

Tablets

Over 16 years: 2 tablets every 30-60 minutes if needed, up to a maximum of 16 in 24 hours. Under 16 years: not to be used.

Under 16 years: not to be used.

What are the side effects of Pepto-Bismol Tablets?
 

Possible side effects:

• Blackening of the tongue or stools, but this is harmless and should go away a few days after the medication is stopped.

• Allergic reaction
