Does Yoga Reduce Unwanted Facial Hair?

Unwanted facial hair is a condition that affects a large number of women.  It can be very upsetting and difficult to conceal.  Health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) cause hair to grow in different parts of the body.  The hair on the face is very noticeable and reduces self-esteem.

Yoga is a popular form of physical exercise that balances body and soul. There is a belief that balancing your body through yoga can help to reduce unwanted facial hair.  The relationship between yoga and unwanted facial hair is that practising certain methods regulates your menstrual cycle and thus reduces your facial hair. This may help your overall wellbeing but requires a lot of dedication and there is no guarantee of success.

Causes Of Unwanted Facial Hair

Hirsutism or unwanted hair occurs on the face, neck, chest, back, tummy and thighs.  In fact it is present everywhere that makes a woman extremely unhappy to have it.  Causes of unwanted facial hair are attributed to hormonal imbalance triggered by conditions such as PCOS or the menopause.  Other health conditions that cause hirsutism include; Cushing's syndrome, obesity, tumours and anabolic steroids.

Underlying health conditions increase the number of androgens in the blood which are linked to the hormone testosterone.  Treating the underlying cause can reduce unwanted hair but you may still need to use hair removal methods.  Some women have hirsutism without an underlying cause.

Treating Hirsutism

Unwanted facial hair is a lifelong condition that requires time and effort to conceal.  There are a number of ways in which you can remove your facial hair on a daily basis.  These include; shaving, waxing, threading, depilatory cream (removes hair), medication (reduces hair growth) and laser treatment.

The method you choose depends on your budget and the time you have available.  All of the methods mentioned temporarily remove facial hair until you stop using them.  No treatment permanently reduces unwanted facial hair because some hairs are unresponsive and hair can grow back again.

All treatments have possible side effects such as rashes, itching and sensitive skin.  Laser treatment is a lengthy process and costly while shaving requires you to do it every day.  Depilatory cream removes hair but it will grow back again while medicated hair reduction cream requires you to continue removing hair while your hair follicles are weakened.

Yoga does not appear on the list of treatments for hirsutism on the NHS Choices website as a definite cure.  However, the relaxing benefits of yoga may make dealing with unwanted facial hair easier.
