Epiduo (0.1%/2.5%) Gel for Acne

Epiduo is a topical skin gel containing Adapalene and Benzoyl Peroxide. It is used as an effective treatment for moderate to severe acne. Both of its active ingredients are effective at treating different parts of the symptoms that occur in acne.

Applied once daily, Epiduo starts working straight away to reduce the incidence of spots and inflammation.

It is also effective at reducing the amount of sebum (oil) produced by the skin and thus prevents further irratation to the skin.

What is Epiduo Gel and how does it work?

Epiduo is a topical skin gel containing Adapalene 0.1% (a retinoid) and Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5% (a peeling agent). It is used as an effective treatment for moderate to severe acne. Both of its active ingredients are effective at treating different parts of the symptoms that occur in acne.

  • Retinoids have very good anti-inflammatory properties but are also effective in unblocking pores.
  • Benzoyl peroxide is a proven antibacterial as well as being effective in reducing the amount of sebum the skin secretes (often a factor in causing inflammation around spots). It also softens and peels the outer layer of skin.

How quickly does it get to work?

Epiduo starts working straight away however as with all acne medicines applied to the skin, you may not see results for up to 2 months after treatment has been started. It is important to be as consistent as possible with your treatment in order for it to be as effective as possible.

How is Epiduo applied?

Epiduo Gel should be applied gently to the acne-affected area of the skin once daily in the evening, preferably before bed. The skin should be cleaned and dried prior to application. Wash hands before and after applying.

Only a thin layer is required for the treatment to be effective, using more will not produce better results but may increase your likelihood of side effects. The gel should be applied with the fingertips, avoid whole hand palm rubbing as this can be more abrasive to the skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.

Can everyone with Acne use Epiduo?

Epiduo Gel is not suitable for those:

  • with a hypersensitivity or allergy to any of its ingredients.
  • patients that are pregnant or planning pregnancy in the short term.
  • patients using other acne products containing retinoids or benzoyl peroxide at the same time.
  • patients using products on the affected areas that can cause irritation, dryness or exfoliation.
  • patients with particularly photosensitive skin or active sunburn

Epiduo gel can cause side effects in a small number of people who use it. Side effects are most common at the start of treatment but can improve as your skin gets used to the treatment.

Common (affect between 1 in 10 and 1 in 100 people)

-          Dry skin: If this occurs you can use a non-oily moisturiser to improve it.

-          Irritant contact dermatitis

-          Skin irritation and burning: You should reduce the amount of times you apply the gel in a week or discontinue using until your skin improves.  Slowly reintroducing the treatment once the skin is better is advised.

Uncommon (affect between 1 in 100 and 1 in 1000 people)

-          Itching (pruritus)

-          Sunburn
